Thermography Basics

Q. What are the key principles of Thermography?
Thermography is the capture and analysis of thermal data to accurately assess patterns of an objects thermal radiation through absorption, reflection, transmission and emission
Infrared radiation is emitted by all objects above zero (-273° C), its wavelength rendering it invisible to the human eye
Infrared radiation increases when energy is transferred to an object triggering an increase in molecular vibration, in turn raising its temperature and radiation output
iRed use Thermal Imaging cameras to capture this non visible infrared radiation data, converting it to a visible image (thermogram)
The process does not measure temperature directly but enables remote analysis of relative temperature and heat variations, accurately sourcing and calculating anomalies through the applied knowledge of thermographic principles

Q. What are the benefits of Thermography?
Non destructive testing method
Captures real time data through high speed imaging, allowing subsequent frame by frame analysis of captured data. Particularly useful in capturing transient phenomena
Creates no interference to normal operational conditions
Enables high volume data capture within short time periods
Precisely locates anomalies through the qualitative analysis of collected data
Assesses the severity of those anomalies through quantitive analysis in order to establish
actionable priorities
Highly efficient mechanism for condition monitoring reporting
Imaging remains possible in challenging environmental testing conditions e.g. Testing of Fire Suppression equipment
Broad possibilities for commercial investigative testing situations

Q. How effective is Thermography in Condition Monitoring?
Thermography offers real time imaging of mechanical and electrical assets during normal operating
conditions to establish accurate and non disruptive analysis aiding predictive maintenance scheduling.
The benefits include:
Highlights the unseen wear and tear of mechanical or electrical components before breakdown
occurs, preventing costly downtime or unnecessary repairs
Supports the processes involved in regulatory compliance with Health and Safety Legislation
Meets Insurance specified risk assessment and prevention criteria
Delivers tangible, long-term cost savings

Thermography from iRed

Q. Where do you operate?
Our national fleet offers nationwide surveys and support.

Q. Do you provide domestic as well as commercial services?
We offer services in a number of ways and often these can include domestic dwellings. Services in such circumstances include investigate testing. litigation and build regulation. Our work is an especially effective tool in the listed building planning process, providing a non destructive method to assess structural integrity and compliance.

Q. How long does the process take?
Each project comes with its own scope and deliverables, as such our timescales will depend very much on what you need. Call us to discuss the details of your project.

Q. How is the data presented?
Project timescale, required outcomes, depth of analysis and budget all play a part in final reporting approach. Reports are offered in hardcopy formats, through digital mediums or a combination of both. One-to-one data analysis consultation and debriefing also available. For further information please view Reporting and Standards.

Q. What are the costs involved?
iRed quote on a project by project basis, your project and needs will be individual and so too are the
services we provide. Any quotation provided will be fully inclusive with no nasty surprises at a later
date. Our full Terms and Conditions can be found here.

Thermography training from iRed

Q. What level of training do you offer?
Our training is delivered to ISO18436 accredited standards, meeting the training element criteria for
advancement through PCN level 1 for successful candidates.

Q. Why Is training important?
Advances in technology mean that thermal imaging equipment is operationally a straight forward procedure but understanding the processes of effective capture and data analysis are much more complex. Specifically, effective training provides a solid grounding in thermal principles helping to develop an understanding of correct data analysis including skills essential in assessing possible sources of inaccurate or false readings.

Q. Why choose iRed?
Our team are a group of passionate and highly experienced individuals committed to the continual research and advancements in thermographic training. We work as a minimum to ISO accredited standards to deliver standardised and bespoke courses tailored to meet the ever changing needs of your own operational requirements. Call our team to discuss your training needs.
